More torque. More driving pleasure. The optimized 190 SL engine

Performance Upgrade for the Mercedes-Benz 190 SL Engine

For drivers who want to give their vehicle more power, we have developed a performance-optimized engine for the Mercedes-Benz 190 SL.

This design significantly improves power and torque—without altering the vehicle’s character.

From the outside, the engine remains stock. The technical optimization works on the inside.

Many owners of a Mercedes-Benz 190 SL would like a little more power and torque for their classic car. The original 190 SL engine, type 121-921, is rated at 105 hp (77 kW) by the manufacturer. However, testing on a dynamometer often reveals that many of these engines actually produce only 86 to 89 hp.

More Power for the 190 SL Engine

The base is a five-bearing engine that runs more smoothly and remains structurally identical to the original engine. To increase power, the crankshaft is replaced with a version featuring a longer stroke

Additionally, connecting rods and pistons from the tuning sector are used. This results in increased displacement and higher torque.

Further measures:

  • Modification of the flywheel
  • Installation of a disc spring clutch
  • Complete, precise balancing of the engine

The disc spring clutch is easier to operate and is better suited for the higher torque of the optimized engine.

Revised cylinder head and carburetor

The cylinder head of the 190 SL engine is also extensively revised.

The following components are used:

  • larger valves with slimmer stems
  • modified valve springs
  • a camshaft tuned for the 190 SL

A distributor with map-controlled ignition ensures more precise ignition.

The Solex PHH44 carburetors are fitted with new jets to optimally balance power and drivability.

Deliberately moderate compression

The compression ratio remains at 8.8:1.

While a higher compression ratio would be technically possible, it would shorten the engine’s service life and impair its smooth operation. Our goal is a more powerful yet durable engine solution for the Mercedes 190 SL.

Result of the performance upgrade

Thanks to these technical modifications, the engine achieves an output of 115 to 120 hp.

The difference is clearly noticeable:

  • the engine responds better to the throttle
  • the 190 SL’s well-known lag when accelerating disappears
  • significantly more torque at low RPMs

As a result, the Mercedes-Benz 190 SL drives much more confidently without losing its classic character.
